Theme 2016: Music at the Dresden Court

Dresden Court was one of the cultural centres of Europe during the 17. and 18. centuries that greatly supported both the music and the fine arts, and led the opening for European influences to blossoming.

Through extensive educational trips – especially through Italy -, three generations of its rulers gathered not only strong impressions of the then major cultural trends in Europe, but also stimulated an intensive exchange among the artists  and musicians: Numerous Saxon musicians and composers undertook study visits to Italy, an opera company founded in Dresden - and existed for more than 100 years - gave stage to the greatest singers of the Italian opera world, the Dresden Court Chapel became one of the best orchestras of Europe. A melting pot of  Central German, Bohemian and Italian music of great significance for the secular and sacred music in Europe emerged.

The names that stand for this blooming period are Schütz and his Venetian teacher Gabrieli; Lotti, Scarlatti and Porpora as teachers of Zelenka, Hasse and Naumann; Pisendel, Heinichen, Veracini, Lotti, Bonocini und Porpora as composers of the Dresden Court; and Maria Antonia Walpurgis, the electress of Saxony, who was a composer herself and an influential patroness.
