Theme 2019: Venice - City of Music
For centuries, Venice was a political, economic and, above all, cultural center of Europe. Important impulses for the sacred and instrumental music and the opera spread out from here.
Venice was the destination of study trips for generations of European musicians. Venetian singers, instrumentalists and composers toured the continent as sought-after guests and formed the musical field in the most important courts in Europe.
In the churches of Venice, especially San Marco, magnificent church music arose, the Venetian polychoral style was influential for a whole epoch and inspired composers also north of the Alps. In the palazzi and schole chamber music was maintained at the highest level, the number of theaters and opera houses was large.
For the spread of the young genre of opera Venice gave important impulses. Giovanni Gabrieli, Claudio Monteverdi, Barbara Strozzi, Antonia Bembo, Pietro Ziani, Antonio Caldara, Tomaso Albinoni, Antonio Vivaldi, Benedetto Marcello and many more not only shaped the musical life of Venice, but also the whole of Europe.
