Theme 2010: London!
London as a center of music and arts in the baroque era will be in the focus of the Austria Baroque Academy 2021.
Up until the 17th century England had a rich musical landscape in which the genres of motet, consort music and lute song flourished.
During the times of Cromwell´s Commonwealth of England between 1642 and 1660 public musical performances were limited and theatres were closed for a long period.
With the restoration of the monarchy musical life began to develop again. London became a flourishing center of music and arts and a popular destination for Italian, French and German composers. Italian, French and German influences mixed with English tradition and made London an international hotspot of the musical life in Europe.
During the Academy we are going to explore music by English composers such as John Dowland, Henry Purcell, Thomas Morley, Thomas Campion, Orlando Gibbons, Matthew Locke, William Boyce, John Blow, John Christopher Pepusch, Thomas Arne. We will also look at works by European composers and their influence on London’s musical life such as Georg Friedrich Händel, Johann Christian Bach, Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach, Francesco Geminiani, Arcangelo Corelli, Jean Baptiste Lully and others.
